What's your childs hyperfixation?

My DS5 is diagnosed autistic and non verbal.

Buses, we count them on the school run, he likes to have pictures of them in his bedroom or even just the company name and spends every spare minute drawing them or writing down the different names, numbers and locations in his notepad.

What's your childs hyperfixation(s)?

DD6 spent about 2 years obsessed with drains! We were nearly late into her ASD assessment as she wanted to check them all on her way.

Currently, it's all the local road names.

That's one I've not heard before, does she type them or write them out repeatedly at home? My son has a notebook as writing is his favourite method of communicating and he has about 400 pages that just say "Trentbarton", with the logo included. We printed out pictures of local buses for him and he cuddles them when he goes to bed.

OP, can our DSs be friends?

Mine is 4, and loves bus/transport logistics - route numbers, lists of stops, company names, the sounds the buses make, maps. He also likes to type bus/train company names on my laptop and we used his drawing tablet to write a bus route sign the other day. I was thinking about making him a little folder with the routes in as a calming aid.

For my 5 year old DS it’s generally electricals but especially different types of leads, eg auxiliary cables, USB cables, anything he can connect or plug in. He’s been obsessed since he was 2 years old and it’s mostly all he talks about. Also loves pipes.

He sounds just like mine! Buses have been his obsession since he was around 1, he's 6 in a couple of months and still absolutely loves them, luckily our local bus route has 3 go past every 10 minutes and on weekdays there's school buses as well so there's an extra couple he can count.

@BusMumsHoliday forgot to add, reach out to your local bus company, they usually have keyrings, T-shirts, mugs and if you're really lucky, little models of their buses which they might sell or as my local bus company does, they'll just give items to any small child, the drivers keep supplies for children like ours.

She reels them all off as we drive past and memorises new ones. Knows everyone's addresses (number + road name). Writes lists of her favourite ones. It's very cute!

Eldest: Animals, fave youtubers, PC gaming (mostly minecraft, but also others, usually animal games or rpgs)
Middle: Cats, dolls, crafts and PC gaming (minecraft, animals, rpgs)
Youngest: Minecraft. Minecraft. Minecraft. And um minecraft. Plus fortnite and fallguys and Minecraft again. Plus youtubers who play minecraft. And a desire to be a Minecraft youtuber.

We have a lot of minecraft chat in our house.

My DS is fascinated by blinds, projector screens and roller doors/shutters - if he sees any he seems powerless to resist touching them and has destroyed countless blinds.

He has also always had a thing about staircases and when he meets someone new he always asks what kind of stairs they have. He will then recall this next time he meets them.

Currently: birds of prey and the famous five. Previously we have had Abba and the Greatest Showman, among others.

Personally, I find special interest more ND affirming than hyper fixation.

I mean, you wouldn't call an adult spending 4 years studying a very niche interest for a PhD hyperfixated.

My DC has a special interest in dinosaurs 🙂

DS 2, very much at the beginning of his journey and has a supreme interest in what specialists call the "rotational schema" which in reality means all toys with wheels get tipped on their side so he can spin their wheels. He runs away from soft play to push and roll everyone else's buggies too! Very funny little dude.
