Dyspraxia?

Had parents evening tonight for 5.5 year old year one child.

Teacher mentioned that he sits funny on his chair almost as if he can’t get comfy to write and his writing is below the expected level. This is no surprise it was in reception but it’s definitely improving.

She mentioned about getting him seen at the doctor as could be a motor problem. He sits fine at home and when I asked him if he could sit like that at school he just said that the chairs are too hard so he’s comfortable hence sitting on his legs.

not sure whether to go to to the doctor for an assessment on motor skills or just let it be. What would you do?

Yes, I would speak to the GP. It could be DCD but there are other possibilities too e.g. hypermobility. If you haven’t already, I would request to speak to the SENCO about it too.

Put in a referral to occupational therapy! They’ll be the ones seeing him if it is dyspraxia- in the mean time- get some Thera putty (Amazon) get them to play with it for 5-10 minutes a day (kneading it) and it will strengthen the muscles in fingers and hands- this May help with the writing. Good luck!
