My two year old dose not talk she babbles alot. She has glue ear but have taken her to two hearing test so far and she is not interested in the puppets at all so can not get a accurate result. She has now been referred to ENT and may have to be sedated to preform the tests needed. She has always been the happiest little thing she dose prefer to play alone and will only run and jump and play tickle games with me. She dose not use gestures at all and will not ask me or let me know what she wants something its alot of guess work. She dose not copy me but if clap my hands will grab them and clap them again for me and similar for games like peekaboo. Could this all be caused by glue ear? Im worried she may be autistic.

Yes, glue ear could cause the difficulties you describe. Has DD been referred to SALT?

No she is under community pead. He last seen her at 18mo have a appointment with him next month. The health visitor has been useless and said to wait for her hearing test but she will not participate in the tests. They a reluctant to actually do anything at all unless they know at what level she can hear. I have rang the healthvistor today to say i would like her to be referred to speech and language and could she come and see her again waiting to hear back.

Good thing you pushed for ENT referral your child may need grommets inserted as glue ear even if improves can come back. Your LO can’t talk because depending on the level of hearing loss and is not able to certain sounds. While you are awaiting ENT appointment request a hearing aid if more than moderate hearing loss. Once you do see the consultant push for grommets and try and avoid the wait and see approach if it has been more than 6 months. Request for a referral for teacher of the deaf which specialist in hearing loss in the pre school years. It might be worth getting on the speech and language hearing list but remember if LO hearing is not resolved then sessions might not be as affective. Teach yourself and LO makaton sign language, always point/use gestures and try and over exaggerate your movements. From experience if your child has glue ear and ASD symptoms then they probably are ASD. But some children do completely lose all traits. The most important thing now is to implement strategies that work for your child as these early years are crucial for communication.
