My son 4yrs starts reception this April and I am so anxious. He has very little social skills, gets very anxious and cries uncontrollable when in New settings. He attended nursery. He started when he was 2.5yrs. He stayed at that particular nusery until he was 3.5yrs, we then moved him because we needed a nusery that offered more hours. With each nursery he attended he cries at drop off, throws himself down and sometimes would bite. After a while he did settle when certain staff came to collect him. He has speech delay, we just finished our sessions with SLT she is very happy with his progress, he now speaks more clearly. His anxiety has settled down in shops etc he doesn't have a melt down but hides behind me if someone gets too close, he will speak and smile at people sometimes. He reads very well, knows all his colours, the alphabeth phonetically and can do small sums, he also writes and Spells his full name. My biggest fear is that due to his speech delay he may find it hard to engage with other children in the class and may have melt down out of frustration of not understanding. At nursery I was told he plays well and follows instructions and once i leave he settles. I am on the waiting list for autism assessment. Also I decided to home school him until he starts reception, I removed him from the last nursery as they excluded him from a preschool graduation they had, which i felt was very unfair, as parents we were not told about it it was posted via social media. They gave him a hat and tool a picture of him but he was excluded from the ceremony itself . Sorry about the rant. Any advice is appreciated

Have you spoken to the school’s SENCO? Is there a plan for transition in place?

Does he have an EHCP (or equivalent SEN plan if you aren’t in England)?

If born after April you can delay school.start for a year.

In England. As you're talking about starting in April are you somewhere else?

Some DC can start reception in April in England. The admissions code allows all parents to defer DC’s start until they are compulsory school age or the beginning of the summer term, whichever is first. This is separate to some summer born DC being educated out of their chronological year group.

Hi OP, sounds exactly the same as my daughter.

We are deferring her reception start for this very reason as she is summer born.
