Naked vs Nappy

My DS, 5yo, non-verbal ASD still has to wear nappies but we’re having a real battle getting him to keep them on. Mostly, I think he just wants to be comfy which to him is naked. But, obviously that ends up being filthy and unhygienic. Totally gross, in fact.

It seems worse overnight as he wants to take it off to go to bed, but he wouldn’t be dry yet. And he always wants to sleep in our bed, but that’s another issue for another thread.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to make it more comfy?

Have you tried different brands and sizes? Different brands can have a different sensory feel. Same for snugger/looser fits.

Do you/others change as soon as DS is wet/dirty (I’m not saying you are neglecting him, but sometimes it can be difficult to tell if wet and e.g. schools don’t always change promptly)? Some DC dislike the sensory feeling of being wet and it makes them reject nappies completely.

Have you tried to make taking the nappy off more difficult? For example, some put a bodysuit over the nappy, then leggings, then a onesie on backwards.

Thank you.

He would be most likely very distressed by a backwards onesie and I’m pretty sure he’d get out of the body suit.

Certainly food for thought.

I don’t think it would work for us either, but I thought I would mention it as it does work for some.
