DS is recently diagnosed as autistic, I suspect that I too may be, we also both have ADHD.

What can I do to make his life easier? All the resources I come across just don’t seem to fit his profile, he’s very verbal, polite, doesn’t (often) publicly meltdown and is usually consolable by me. He struggles in school (mid-primary), is keen to make friends but doesn’t get the art of social interaction, his executive function us years behind but he’s a bright boy and with 1-2-1 I know he’d be amazing. School don’t seem keen to help him as he’s not failing (but falls behind a little each year) and I don’t know what to ask. So many of the resources are open ended and my brain won’t process that, printables and checklists would help me more!

We have been advised (not by school) to apply for a EHC Plan when school goes back.

Yes, do request an EHCNA. You don’t need to wait until the school goes back. IPSEA has a model letter you can use. If you get an EHCP it could include things like 1:1, OT, SALT and a mentor/coaching, which will help DS.

In the meantime, the school must still provide support. Have you spoken directly to the SENCO? Do they run a nurture group or similar? At lunchtimes, do they run groups/clubs for those who struggle socially?

Do you receive DLA for DS? If not, apply. The Cerebra guide is helpful when completing the form.
