ASC and possible Cognitive Delays

My DS was diagnosed with ASC almost a year ago. The therapist who diagnosed him said he could have possible Cognitive delays but they can’t diagnose this, what does this mean?

How old is your ds?

Unintentionallycausingoffence · 11/07/2023 14:27

Seven, almost six at the time of the assessment.

Did they mean that it wasn’t possible at his age or that they didn’t have the means to do it?

My ds is 9 and has just taken the WISC cognitive assessment which is used for children aged 6-16. An educational psychologist might be able to use this, or other methods to evaluate your ds.

I second an educational psychologist assessment. Does DS have an EHCP?

He does

The Assesor said another professional would be better able to assess his cognition.

If DS has an EHCP did he have an ed psych assessment as part of the EHCNA? EP assessments can include cognitive assessments. If it didn’t or you need updated ones have you request a reassessment of needs from the LA?

Or do you mean the ed psych as well as the therapist who diagnosed ASC said they couldn’t assess?

He had an Ed Psyc assesment when he was three and a half. While she didn’t say he has a Cognitive Delay she assessed his cognition at the time as half his chronological age. She had no official diagnosis for him..

He was in a Mainstream Nursery when he had the Ed Psych assesment. He has been in a Specialist setting since September and has come on so much. He rarely sees his Community Peadiatrician but talking to other parents he has a huge back log.

If you want updated assessments you can request a reassessment of needs. That way you can look at updated EP and paed assessments. You could also call the community paed’s secretary and request an earlier appointment if you wish.

👍Thanks I’ll try that
