Suspect Special Needs

Good evening,

My DD is 7, she attends a state school. We’ve had issues with school refusal for a year now, we have moments where there are improvements but she’s often reluctant to go to school. She struggles with concentration and listening massively, she has regressed in her learning, she can be impulsive where she says things that aren’t appropriate at school and after realises she shouldn’t have said them, she actually said herself, she says things without thinking. She has also had tics. Other then that she is very affectionate, likes to help me and be with me, prefers to be outdoors than indoors and is a kind little girl.
Do you think she has special needs?

It sounds like there is enough to warrant further assessment.

Have you spoken to the school’s SENCO? What support is the school currently providing?

Yes we’ve spoken to the SEN teacher, she does group activities but even then she finds it hard to maintain focus. She was more positive about learning when we did some work at home, she is very far behind too and I think it’s affecting her confidence.

The school should be providing more support. You could think about requesting an EHCNA.
