Private ADHD diagnosis -> NHS

We are applying for a private ADHD diagnosis for DC. They are on the NHS waiting list but I’d rather they not fail for 2 years before being seen. We are seeing a psychiatrist that we’ve met before and like and trust.

If they are diagnosed (and I was as a child too so there is a high chance), will we ever be able to push the diagnosis back to the NHS? Can we still go through the NHS assessment? Do we still go through the NHS assessment? I know schools will accept a private diagnosis so that’s half the battle.

How does the system work? Help!

if you get a private diagnosis it won't affect the wait time if you also wanted to get one through the nhs. the assessment will be completely separate from the nhs too. if you decide on medication as a treatment this will be prescribed and titrated through the private clinic too

once the dosage is at the correct level you can, through a shared care agreement, move the prescription to the nhs

@WhimHoff do you mind me asking who you're using for the private diagnosis? We're East Anglia based and looking for recommendations as we want to ensure we use someone trusted and proven in the light of the Panorama investigation into ADHD clinics.

Sorry for thread hijacking.

We did this - paid for a private diagnosis then sent this to the GP - they accepted this and started treatment- the school also accepted for concessions etc. Speak to your GP. I had heard horror stories that once you went private you had to privately fund all medications etc but that was not the case.
It is horrific that people have to do this and we were lucky that we could but it was a life and death situation at the time.
Good luck.
