Hi ladies so I have recently found out my son has autism. He is non verbal 2.9 years old. Today we went to soft play and he didn’t join in and doesn’t know about sharing and seeing all the other children playing and my son just running in the eating area got me so emotional I left after half an hour of the two hour slot crying. He doesn’t play with toys and just runs everywhere espcecially outside so has to be in the pushchair or runs off. Does it get better? I’m so emotional. In the last theee months he has started to follow simple instructions, get his shoes, ball, book, close the door etc he can now clap, wave, point, knows his colours, animals, numbers, alphabet as when I ask him he points at everything correctly. He can match and is a whizz at the iPad. He flaps his arms which is fine but I find running away and not taking the hardest. Anyone else had their toddler do this and with age things get better? He is at a nursery who are aware and helping him but will start a NARP provision in September thankfully. Any advice is very appreciated. TIA

So sorry that you're struggling @Sumy. I think it's perfectly normal to be upset and have some level of grief.

I've never heard of a NARP. Is this where he'll be assessed to see what his needs are?

It’s a nursery for special needs children only two in my borough and only a few places we applied and got it Thank God. It’s one adult to 2 kids 3 hour sessions a day. It’s for a year then they will tell us what nursery to go to and help with ehcp. They will give him all the necessary help during that year, on going assessments etc it’s 4 days a week.

That sounds extremely helpful @Sumy. Does that fit around your work?

It's really good that you can still both work and access the place. It sounds like it will be useful to send him.
