What can we do we if an autistic child is point blank refusing to wear a school tie (clip on). He used to like it but all of a sudden he cannot tolerate it, he would wear it but it would be straight off as soon as he left the school building. Now we can't get him to wear it at all. I am at a loss.

he probably should be at a sen school but getting the LA to agree is another thing!

can the school make him wear it? Of course I'm not dismissing the importance of wearing correct uniform but it's causing him so much distress!

The school must make reasonable adjustments, if that includes not wearing a tie then that is what they need to do.

If you think DS needs to move schools you can ask for a early review of the EHCP. If the LA agree to hold one but then don’t amend or amend but don’t named the school you want you can appeal. Unfortunately the LA don’t have to agree to hold an early review and there’s no right of appeal so if they do refuse you would have to wait to your AR or request a reassessment of needs which, if refused, does come with the right of appeal.

Thank you. He is sometimes happy to wear a tie if he's just wearing a shirt - he doesn't like wearing a shirt with a tie and a jumper on the top. But it's so cold, I think wearing a jumper trumps wearing a tie right now, right? So he'll go in a jumper with no tie today. I will try and get the tie on but won't be pushing it

as for the schooling, he is due a review soon. The school he is going to aren't very supportive but the senco has informed me the LA will up their schools funding before even looking at a sen school. He doesn't get max funding on his EHCP but needs it. Even the teachers have admitted to struggling to meet his and the other students needs in their classes due to lack of teaching assistants. He's not badly behaved in lessons but he's severely behind academically and needs a lot of emotional support and guidance. The teachers are trying to push for more support in their lessons because it's often teacher, class and DS. It's not fair on any of them.

You’re right, a jumper is more important. I hope the school accepted the lack of tie as a reasonable adjustment.

Following the AR if the LA refuse to name the school you want you can appeal. Don’t let the school or LA put you off.
