Anyone got any recommendations for books that would be suitable to explain autism and/or sensory processing disorder to a 7 year old. She hasn't been formally diagnosed due to the long wait but us showing a lot of the signs and starting to notice she's different so don't want to wait until diagnosis to discuss with her.

My little boy hasn't been diagnosed yet but we have brought a book called "all cats are on the autism spectrum" I think for a child of such a young age (son 5 his brother is 7 and sisters are 5 and 8) this book is perfect with out to much detail that they don't need, bonus my kids love cats so now its a book opened daily and to look at and read. The positive link between cute cats and austim is a bonus for us. 🥰

Thanks for this recommendation and to OP for starting this thread, I will buy this book! In the same position as OP, so following with interest.

Its a lovely book to be fair, its gender neutral and focuses on positives. So for any child I think its a lovely way to start the conversation of what austim is. X

My 10 yearold when diagnosed was recommended this book by his assesor : "My awesome Autism" by Nicki Saunders and he loved it. Another one which I found very useful for myself and him was "The Secret Life of Rose: Inside An Autistic Head" in which a 11 year old autistic girl explains what is going on for her and her Mom then translates it for parents of autistic kids. We read it together and he laughed a lot on the common things he found with the girl.
