Assessment by educational psychologist?

I have been asked if I would agree to an assessment by the educatinal psych.
I am a bit suspicious, but I am suspicious at everything suggested to me by the cdc, as they appear to be in cohoots with lea.
Basically I have not yet started the statementing but have been asked for my consent for this. I have an assessment by a clinical psych, who agrees that my ds has sld, and needs alot of support and specialist help.
Does the lea educational psych really need to do an assessment of my ds? He is not at a nursery or preschool, and is 32 months old.

I would i enclined to agree with you deeeja, if your DS is not yet in nursery or pre school.

Certainly when you apply for a statement, but i dont see how they could help before that tbh.

Sounds like you need to talk some more to them. Early intervention is the name of the game these days and nurseries and schools like to get support sorted for children before they arrive where possible.

Personally, I would say yes, reason being you can use the Ed Psych assessment as evidence for statement application. Having said that, both times I had a Dx for my boys there was at least one load-of-bolleaux Ed Psych assessment to ignore first (he knows all his colours and made a complex snowman- that was 2 years ago, still only knows yellow and orange PMSL!)

Peachy, that is the kind of poop assessment I am worried about. They may want to get it out of the way, but I somehow don't think it is to have the support in place before he starts.
I am at my paranoid worst today, and I think the lea are trying to set me up for some sort of fall during statement process.
I already have a clinical psych report, paediatricians report, salt report, all of which I have had to challenge in some way, and I am thinking of getting a private educational psych report for statement. I was under the impression that educational psychologists report is not needed until statement is under way. I hardly think the lea care about my ds and his needs so much to 'help' me get the statement.

You are rightt hat they don't need the report yet, and tbh ed psych's are all in the LEA's pockets anyway (controversial post alert!!!)

have you thought about www.bibic.org.uk, they now offer the option of ed psychs and they are not LEA associated at all. I ahve their price list and info apck scanned in now so if you CAT me Ic an always send it to you.

If he is not at school yet and you have not applied for a Statement, then I personally think it is a waste of yours and his time. But on the other hand, he won't even know he is being assessed if they do it.

Evidence for a Statement has to be "current" and by that I mean they like it to be up-to-date as possible.

Save your money, don't go for your independent EP assessment yet, save it for when YOU want him Statemented, it will carry more weight then.

When are you looking at starting him? if it's Nursery at 3, then I would suggest a statement application would be something to consider shortly- you need to leave a minimum 6 months (bearing in mind that's the legal timescale and there's often at least one delay in there which can extend it- for example if you appeal or a professional delays their report, the LEA can claim an extension (have been through statementing for 2 kids LOL). If however you're not so concerned about Nursery stage then leave the Ed Psych for sure, still recommend BIBIC as they offer therapies but yes would skip Ed Psych.
