My DS is 10 and goes into Year 6 in September.
Diagnosed in Year 3 as being ‘prominently’ dyslexic. We then hit lock down and home schooling. Due to his learning difficulties we moved areas as there was only one secondary school option available to him and we knew the SEN support was insufficient.
Moved to an area with many ‘fantastic’ schools. Unfortunately only a few would accept him and so we picked an independent school with great support and he’s done well. Sadly though, not well enough. He’s achieving ‘C’ in all his subjects and works so hard. We’re so happy with his results and his report from
his teachers. He has extra 1-2-1 support three times a week as well as in class support.
He had a review with a Ed Physic at the end of term and it seems his issues are quite complex and even though he’s bright, his processing - visual and memory, are very weak. This is new information and wasn’t present during his first assessment. He’s going to need a lot of support throughout his school life and that’s not something his current school can provide when he moves to senior school (although there is little chance he’ll even be accepted).
We’re so lost as to what to do next? Another school move will mean starting again - making friends and settling into another routine. We’ve been advised that mainstream state school isn’t an option for him. However, he’s not dyslexic enough for a special school.
If we’re luckily enough to find another school for him, how do we manage the move. AGAIN! I feel so guilty that we’ve moved it so many times; at the time we felt it was the right thing.
He’s such a wonderful boy. He works so hard and is carrying on with work over the summer holidays. He just can’t put in any more hours. He finds it hard to make friends but he’s a good judge of character and the friends he has are lovely. He’s found his people. I would just love him to stay where he is but with all the adjustments he needs including reducing the number of GCSEs to an appropriate amount.
Has anyone experienced this and what have you done? Can anyone recommend a school in Gloucestershire for child with dyslexia?
