Speech Therapy Assessment

DS had his initial screening for Speech Therapy this morning and it went quite well. I'm not sure what they were expecting or whether it was a foregone conclusion that he would get ST because of his ASD diagnosis. The Speech therapist and her assistant were both very friendly and encouraging and were very positive about the fact DS has some basic communicative speech. The only word he managed in the assessment session was 'glasses' ( on the Mr Potato Head he was playing with) but at least that was something!

Of course we have not actually got anywhere yet in terms of new help but it feels like an okay start.

That's good to hear. A lot of people on the SN board have had negative experiences with SLT (ours has been very mixed; some awful, some excellent) so it's nice to hear something positive!

DS2 loves the glasses on Mr Potato Head!

glad it went OK. did they say when next appointment would be, or what their next steps would be?

The next step is a full assessment to determine the best type of therapy for him. I don't have an appointment date but the clinic is in the same building as my other son's nursery so I will be calling in to check !

I must admit I had never heard of Mr PH until the meeting but I will seek him out in the shops

We use Mr PH a lot in ABA - 'give me eyes, nose, mouth' etc, + also for DS2's fine motor skills.

There's also a Star Wars one - Darth Tater
