My son (almost 4) has a wide vocabulary and knows lots of songs and colours shapes etc but if he wants a drink or is tired he doesn't ask he cries. His overall understanding is amazing. It's all going in

Yes he prob has autism and is being assessed and we are having speech therapy and getting everything ready for school etc but I just wondered if anyone had a child similar to mine with plenty words but so won't ask for stuff or doesn't say he's tired etc and if so how did it work out for u

Yes my son was similar lots of individual words but lacked the ability to communicate needs at that age. We had private SALT who specialised in ASD for 3 years. He’s a teen now and has been through mainstream primary and now mainstream secondary. Although a little young for his age his speech and communication is fine.

His speech was very limited when he started reception. He could answer yes/no type questions or answer choice type questions but nothing more complex such as “what did you do at school today”. He couldn’t relay an event etc.
We had an EHCP in place by the time he started reception and had a 1:1 TA. The private SALT use to do some of his sessions in school so the TA could do follow up activities.
We were very fortunate with his primary school they did a great job meeting his needs.

@SnarkyBag my son is heads or tails if he chooses to answer yes no questions. We have applied for an EHCP so it should come through but whether it'll be 1-1 i don't know as I've heard that's rare and that they tend to just allocate a number of hours per day and per week for funding so might not be full

To be fair to DS’s schools his EHCP is a wishy washy waste of paper they could have gotten away with doing much much less so it was very good fortune we got a place in an amazing school.
