Toilet training

I'm really really really struggling getting 5 year old DS toilet trained.

He's never done anything on a toilet at home, he's petrified of the toilet and always has been. Physically he could do it but he is so afraid he can't.

At school and home he is having multiple accidents every day and I'm drowning in washing. Everytime school or I make a couple of steps forward he cottons on and changes his tactic so we go backwards again after 2-3 days. I picked him up from school everyday this week to between 2-4 bags of wee soaked uniform.

He won't wear pull ups/nappies and I forced it a couple of months back before I had a breakdown and it left him an awful rash.

I don't even know where to start with getting it sorted or other tactics to try.

Anyone else been in this position? Any tips to either make the wash load lighter or even better to get him sorted?

Hello, this sounds really tough, do you think he would wear cloth pull ups? So essentially potty training pants but with a higher absorbency that saves the clothes. Something like these www.thenappylady.co.uk/trainer-pants/super-pro-underwear-by-charlie-banana.html They look much more like pants than normal pull ups.
Downside is they're all quite pricey.
