My DS is starting sixth form in September. During a general meeting I discussed the possibility of a dictaphone for my son as he finds taking notes difficult . School told me that there is a bursary available for pupils with an ehcp. I have tried to look into this but I’m a bit confused.

DS currently receives DLA which is soon to change over to PIP. The gov website seemed to say he had to receive dLa / Pip and universal credit or esa.

Would he receive either of these as a full time student ?

There's 3 separate points here.

  1. If DS needs a dictaphone for educational purposes it should be in the EHCP, and therefore the LA are responsible.
  1. DS can claim UC despite being in full time education if he has a limited capacity for work and is in receipt of DLA/PIP. Universal Credit replaced income based ESA, so DS won't be able to apply for ESA. Be aware if you claim child benefit, CTC or UC for him they will stop if DS claims UC in his own right.
  1. If DS is in receipt of DLA/PIP and UC he can claim the 16-19 bursary.
