Carer's Allowance entitlement

It's looking increasingly likely that I am going to have to leave work to look after our son full time. He currently receives higher rate DLA for care and low rate for mobility. Would I be automatically entitled to receive Carer's Allowance if I apply, or do they still look at each case on an individual basis even if I meet all of the criteria? Also, if I am entitled to it does anyone know how long it would take for payments to start after I finish work?

You are automatically entitled unless you have earning of more than £128pw after expenses. I don't know how long claims are currently taking, sorry.
