Intellectual disability

Posted last week but just got my sons assessment report so now know what's what. His scores are consistent of intellectual disability... we knew he was struggling with learning but this has come as a shock. Does anybody else have a child that has this? Any advice or anything is appreciated thank you xx

What assessment did they use and what were the scores?

Did they do a non verbal ability test?

Hi they used the wechsler and Vineland assessments all scores came out exceptionally low or below average.
Socially he is fine and that isn't effected but everything else is I'm finding it hard to get my head around that as to see him with a group of friends you wouldn't really know any different apart from a few speech differences ( very very mild)
Do you have any experience of ID please? It's all very new to me so any sort of advice or support is greatly appreciated.

I asked about scores because some children may have a specific learning difficulty (like Dyslexia or Dyscalculia)-- as this is different to an overall learning disability.

It's depends on the severity of the learning disability. But I found that although they are sociable, they can be quite immature for their age. But like all kids, the presentation is different. Learning would become difficult as they do through the stages at school. But that's not say they can't learn! They just need a differentiated approach to learning and surely they will fly. Does your son have an EHCP? It will be good to get one for him, so that he can have support at his school.

Thank you for posting this I've just been going back through my DD report as she's going to secondary and I recall them telling me she was close to having an intellectual disability. I read the report at the time she had it and it advocated for an EHCP but the school convinced me she wasn't affected enough to need one. I think it's more that she's a quiet compliant non disruptive child so they overlooked the fact.
I'm now about to start pushing for one but wish I had done 3 years ago.

We had a meeting with the senco today and she said that we need to go through another assessment before we can apply for an ehcp myself an my husband we're under the impression the assessment carried out by the phycologist (NHS) was sufficient enough. The report has only just been written up so it is very recent. Can anyone shed any light please? X

No no no no. The SENCO wrong. Please apply for the EHC plan yourself. If the LA agrees that your DS needs a plan they will carry out their own assessment as that is their statutory duty.

Sorry just saw your other question.

When you apply for the EHC plan yourself, use the Ed psych report and any reports/ academics attainment records from school, and use that to support your application.

Didn't read you post properly when I saw it the other day but even to me that doesn't sound right Mabel have you found anymore out since you posted?

My 7 year-old has moderate learning difficulties which I'm guessing is similar to intellectual disability. He is in mainstream primary with an ehcp.
