Feeling very anxious about my dd 8.5. She is currently undergoing tests for suspected ASD. I had a meeting with teacher and Sen lady yesterday and they said my dd doesn't speak at all in class or to her friends in the playground and it's affecting her learning. I got home and googled this and selective mutism came up, now i'm worried she has this. Anyone else had any experience of it with their child and does anything help??

SM can be comorbid with ASD.

I have 2 DC with SM - 1 also has ASD and 1 doesn't, although does have other MH problems. A SALT experienced with SM has helped the most, as has reducing their overall anxiety and making the environment less overwhelming from a sensory PoV. Also reminding people it is can't speak not won't.

I had this as a child - I was mute for years in certain circumstances. Eventually I grew out of it but was always a bit shyer than others. My life has worked out well and I am happy so don’t overly worry about your DD.

The number one thing is get help from a professional and don’t put any pressure on your DD about this and don’t let her see you are anxious about it. My dad was really anxious about my muteness and pushed me to be more outgoing - and this just made things worse.
