Recently, my eldest child has been diagnosed with autism. I suspected this was coming, but for some reason it still came as a big shock. I'm unsure whether it was the relief, the weight lifting etc, but has anybody else felt the same way?

Lots of people find diagnosis really hard even though they have known for a while that it’s likely to be the case. You are definitely not alone. You need to give yourself time to process all the emotions you are feeling Flowers

It's very hard, we had to fight so hard for the diagnosis and even though we definitely knew it was ASD (family history and very similar presentation) we still had to process the actual confirmed diagnosis and so many conflicting and confused emotions.

However, 3 months on we are in such a different ad
and better place. Try to think of it as signposting more than anything else: it has helped us access the right support, change our behaviour in response to meltdowns and more importantly, my DS is processing this new information about himself (which is a terribly important process although they are 10 so maybe older than your child).
