Social care assessment for ehcp

So my 7 year old's ehcp application got through the first stage and the Lea have agreed to assess him.

We got a phone call today from someone who wants to do the social care assessment for the ehcp by telephone on Wednesday this week. Does anyone know what happens or what questions they will ask me? I'm a bit worried about it although I'm not sure why. Will it be compulsory to have them involved long term if ds gets his ehcp? Or can we just let them do their assessment and say no thankyou to them being involved after that?

We had a social worker from the children with disabilities team about 12 years ago with my older dc. She wasn't helpful though and I decided we were better off without her.

Try not to worry. Unless there are serious concerns social care won't be able to get you off their books quick enough and the assessment will consist of confirming you aren't currently on their caseload. However, such a response isn't acceptable, but if you don't want their input you don't have to challenge it.

If they do offer a more in depth assessment they are likely ask about some or all of family life, socialising, support, needs, behaviour, risks etc. Your previous contact with them is likely to be discussed too.

An assessment could open doors to direct payments, so don't rule their involvement out completely.

Thankyou. The assessment was fine. She just asked if he went to any clubs, what he enjoyed doing etc. She will write a very short report for the ehcp and no further involvement.

Hi

Really helpful thread because we are just behind you. The LA agreed to assess and if I hadn't seen this thread, when the caseworker mentioned Social Care, I would been panicked!

👍

@pandyandy1 glad it's helped. I found the first stage took forever but now that's over it's all happening really quickly.
