Hi

I need some advice.
I have a 22 month old daughter with no speech. She only says the “mmmm” sound. She only says one word “mama” when she needs me. Apart from that, nothing! No speech at all.
-She has tantrums
-Watchs lots of YouTube (to avoid her tantrums).
-Not very social

But it more her speech that worries me. No speech at all at 22 months. She doesn’t point. Doesn’t tell me what she wants. Doesn’t follow any direction and seems to have no understanding of any speech. Doesn’t follow any orders

She does eat well.
She is a good size
She smiles when we sing to her.
She likes to be affectionate especially with me and cuddles me.
She still breastfeeds at night. Hoping to stop soon.

I have just referred her to speech therapy but they told me that could take up to 8 weeks

Question:

  1. has anyone had a child with no speech and no understanding at 22 months then turned out normal?
  2. What can I do to help her?
  3. is this normal? Or something wrong with her

Any advice will help

You could try the M Chat screening tool for autism. I found it helpful when my son was 22 months. It helps to clarify whether speech is the issue or whether there is a deeper problem with communication
