Hi, I have posted before regarding concerns about my DD she is currently under a pead she is 2.4 months & has no words. Anyway speech and language therapy has advised we start PECS even though she's never actually seen my DD, which is fine I will do anything they advise may help..
However my question is we have started PECS and in phase 1 so when she reaches for the item she points to it .. so should I be discouraging pointing to pick up the card instead?! Because pointing to get what she wants was always a massive thing so now I feel.bad trying to change it. Thanks xx

Some SLT services are moving away from PECS and have started introducing core boards. Although there are phases within PECS- a lot of it surrounds requesting for things in the earlier stages (eg. "I want...") but there are a number of ways we communicate things (e.g. to express disappointment, fear, likes/dislikes) but PECS do not yet introduce these till its later phase.

Ideally, your SLT should have pointed you to attend a PECS workshop, where you learn how to go about implementing PECS. I am not trained in PECS so cannot advice what to do. Maybe other parents who have more knowledge of PECs or have done with their children, will come along. In any case, I would look into core board and ask your SLT if she's willing to introduce this to your DD.

Oooo ask your SLT to refer you to the Hansen Programme More than Words. In fact, I would also get the book from Amazon! Just excellent. It's a great (massive book) which gives you tips, games, information about encouraging communication within your child's environment.
