Four year old hitting

My four year has been diagnosed with Global developmental Delay which we don’t know the cause of yet.

He has hit me in the past but now it has escalated to him hitting and throwing things at me everyday sometimes these are in response to things I can identify like an expected noise or being tired.
But often he will hit me and throw things at me while we are playing I was told by portage working to firmly say stop and put up my hand in the stop gesture but he’s already too far gone for that to be effective if anything it will make him worse and the only thing I can do is put him in his bedroom to calm down. Which results in me getting scratched and bitten when I carry him upstairs.

Has anyone else experienced this and what helped its getting to the point where I don’t want to spend time with him he also starts mainstream school in September and I am very concerned he will hurt the teachers or other children.

Lots of kids are exhibiting more violent behaviour at the moment due to lockdown.

Have you read the Explosive Child? Is a good way of thinking about what's going on behind the behaviour.

He couldn't be in physical pain and not able to tell you? Dental maybe?
