Are you eligible if your child gets higher rate mobility?

How exactly does it work? what are the costs involved and what is included in the price.

Hi L. Yes you are eligible if your child gets higher rate mobility DLA. There are 2 schemes, contact hire or purchase. Most people go for the hire scheme. Depending on what you need, you hand over the mobility part of your DLA each month, and can pay a varying deposit - again depending on what car you want. Some small cars have no deposit at all. I went for a 7 seater toyota and paid £2000 deposit. Included is tax, insurance, all service and repair costs plus breakdown cover. And its FAB check their website here I found the trickiest thing was coordinating selling my old non-motability car in time to get my hire one, and was actually stuck with 2 cars at one point. But now we are actually using the scheme I will definitely do it again when the 3 year hire period is up.

Thanks very much. I think we will need to get a 7 seater too just for the space......thanks for the link, Ill do some more reading.

So after your £2000 deposit you pay your mobility money over but no extra on top of your motability. I think everything being included will suit us brilliantly.

Yes, that's it. And remember you are still left with the care component of the DLA (DD3 gets middle rate). There is a mileage limit of something like 15000 per year, after which there is an extra charge per mile. I've nowhere near reached that though, so all I pay after deposit is the mobility bit of DLA.

You could even get lucky and find a 7 seater for nil deposit (they change every 3 months) - I remember the Vauxhall Zafira was one of the nil deposit options we were considering when we got our last one, it didn't have a CD player though, so I opted for something else!

Its a year away form us but its something i was keen to know about as it is somthing that will benefit us. There are a couple of nice 7 setaers on there at the mo with nil (or very little) deposit, guess we will see what about this time next year.

Mine would have to have a CD player but more for my ds benefit than mine....for me it would have to be air con

We got out motability car in March and it has changed our life.

We can all go out as a family now!! (we have a 7 seater)

The relief at not having to find cash for MOT, tax, breakdowns etc is huge. It is really worth it for us.
