My 4 year old (5 at the end of July) has diagnosed PDA and severe ADHD. He is medicated for the ADHD which seems to help a bit but brings out the PDA more - so swings and roundabouts!
He started reception in September and after 2 weeks was put on a reduced timetable due to behaviour and not being able to cope. Probably worth noting that we only got the diagnosis in December and as yet there is no EHCP.
He remained on a part time timetable of mornings only until the schools shut. Obviously it is looking unlikely that they will go back before the end of this academic year.
So this means that he has only attended about a third of his reception year. He is very bright, has an unbelievable ability to learn and retain information but has absolutely no desire if ability to write anything or participate in the curriculum. He also has huge problems with social interaction.
I just don’t know what to do about school in September. Should he repeat reception? Can he do this? Should we just plough on with year 1, accepting the fact that it’ll be a disaster?! We know that he is likely not to be able to stay in mainstream education, but until he gets an EHCP we don’t have any other options.
Anyone got any words of wisdom? Or reassurance? I’ll take anything!
