DS 8yrs and in Year 3 has ASD and a language disorder, struggles with receptive and expressive language. Despite this he is good at and enjoys maths, however really struggles with worded problems. He has no issue with the maths calculation but extracting what is being asked. His actual reading/decoding is good and age appropriate, although understanding not quite as good. He is a very visual learner. Does anyone have any strategies that will help? He does receive SALT but no where near enough and obviously because of lockdown hasn’t had this for about 6 weeks. I know this will be an ongoing issue but want him to continue to enjoy maths.

He sounds like mine 8yrs old - dot in dot :D What worked for us: i have taken simple problem lets say spiders and web. There if 7 spiders in a web 3 spiders jumped off how many left. I have then cut out pic of spiders for him and a web and we were reading it and doing the "action" on the spiders. I have laminated word problem so I can change numbers. I did that for - + * /.Im happy to send you a picture of how it looks like if you would like? Big hugs Smile

Ah and I havent started with spiders, I have started with things he likes: no of wheels on the car, or nuggets like in this example to draw his attention. You might want to read about visualisation. Its apparently very common way in school to teach comprehension (not in my boy's school . I am just only starting to use it for text so when we read I kind of draw a story then he finds it easy to answer questions. I am not sure how far that will take us, just thought I will share.
