I remember the little boy Hamish, the boy with dwarfism, from last time this was on, but I will obviously watch it with different eyes now that I have ds! Would love to see repeats of the old programmes actually!

Born to Be Different Thursday 13 September
9:00pm - 10:00pm
Channel 4
For the past seven years, Channel 4 has been following the lives of six children. Hang on a minute. Isn't that what BBC1's Child of Our Time
does? Well, not exactly: each of these children was born with a disability of some sort. Emily, for instance, has spinabifida and, unless she has an operation, she will always need nappies; Zoe's hands and feet turn inwards, so it's extremely difficult for her to walk; Shelbie has a rare chromosome condition and is so seriously mentally and physically disabled that she has a very limited life expectancy. Yet although this could be horribly depressing TV, it's not. The kids are, without exception, delightful and the parents manage to tread the fine line of being inspirational, brave and brutally honest about how tough it can be, without ever toppling over into martyrdom or sainthood.

Great. Be nice to see how all of the children are getting on, thanks

needmorecoffee · 09/09/2007 07:43

Fab. I remember Shelbie as we've seen her at hospital. That doctor who whispered that he would 'let her go if she was his' is forbidden to come anywhere near DD (he once bet his career that she didn't have infantile spasms. Still waiting for him to lose his job)

chonky · 09/09/2007 08:23

It's a fabulous series - but I know I'll cry loads . I have a dd with PMLD, but I find the scenes with Shelbie in hospital really upsetting. Her mum's absolutely inspirational.

William the little boy with tuberusclerosis (sp) & his family have been in our local paper & on the news lately as they are trying to raise £25k for a downstairs bedroom & shower room to their home.
They have another baby now & William is sleeping in his parents bedroom but they need to provide him with a safe space & the extension will cost around £50k, I think the disabled facilities grant will only cover half

anniebear · 09/09/2007 19:37

I cried buckets when I watched this, mainly because of Shelbie , bit too close for comfort with the seizures

Don't know why, but I will watch again armed with a box of tissues!!!

RTKangaMummy , you will have to do a reminder when its on incase I forget

heartinthecountry · 09/09/2007 21:39

Oh really hope I don't forget to watch this.

needmorecoffee - I wouldn't want that doctor anywhere near my child either. i remember shouting at the television when he said that.

wheresthehamster · 09/09/2007 21:49

I didn't realise there was going to be a follow up - I hope I remember to watch it.

Last time round I missed the last episode because we were in Wales. I settled down to watch it then realised that channel 4 is different in Wales!! No one else had watched it or videoed it and I was so worried about Shelbie. I'll never forget that doctor either.

Sidge · 09/09/2007 22:15

Oh great, I watched this first time round and found it incredibly moving.

Since then I have had DD2 (who has a genetic disorder) so it will be even more poignant.

Thanks for the reminder.

Mitchell81 · 10/09/2007 09:50

I have watched it every year since the children were born in 2000, My daughter was also born in 2000, so the age of the children is so appropriate for my DD

anniebear · 10/09/2007 17:26
