..what's the sign for cheese?! Its DD3 latest favourite food, and I don't believe its a sign that i've ever come across.

Ahh. a bit like "cake" but with bottom hand palm facing up and top hand with fingers together??

I can give you the written description in my Signalong book, I think it's the same sign.

"Fingertips of working bent hand ( palm down, pointing forward/in rest on supporting flat hand (palm up, pointing forward/in) "

I always think that the cheese sign looks like the sign for 'z' but with the 'working hand' bent. It is sooo hard to explain. Have you looked at www.totalcommunication.org.uk they have video footage of lots of signs which are far easier than written descriptions

Can I add a question to this thread? Anyone know the makaton signs for swan, squirrel and zebra? My DS knows a lot of 'ordinary' animals but is struggling with the more unusual ones. I'd like to use the signs to prompt his recognition and understanding. Thanks!

I looked on the total communication site and am afraid cheese is not on there and I doubt your ones are on sphil.

I think zebra is making your hand go over your body with fingers outwards to signfy the stripes and then making the sign for animal afterwards (middle two fingers and thumb making the shape of the head with thump and little finger making the ears). I did know squirrel but it has escaped me and not sure about swan. I've got a feeling that they did the sign for swan on one of the 'something special' programmes so it may be on their website or on one of the DVDs if you have got them. Makaton produce great books with the less common signs in. I think they are called something to do with the National Curriculum. Signalong have always prodcued a great selection of books on 'topic' signs. Forest books have some good resources www.forestbooks.com aswell. If i remember when I am at school I'll have a look for you. I love learning new signs!
