Hello, I've been worried by my son's speech and language report and I'm unable to contact the therapist until tomorrow so am wondering if anyone here will be able to help me.

My Ds2 is still under Speech and Language with a delay in receptive and expressive language. He has no other special needs diagnosed however he is awaiting an ADOS assessment.

I've just received his latest Speech and Language report, for understanding of language the therapist used the Sentence Comprehension subtest of the Assessment of Comprehension and Expression. He is apparently on percentile rank 1, with 16 being age appropriate. This (obviously) looks incredibly low, the report then states that there is a severe and significant delay with understanding language. I'm sure this is an error, I'm sure that my son's delay is not as bad as that.

What I'm really wondering is would a ranking of 1, for and 8 year old, actually mean that a child has no understanding of language at all?

Hi, a percentile rank means where abouts he is compared to other children of his age in the same test, a bit like a percentage.

So if he is in the first percentile then out of 100 children his age 99 would have received a higher score on the test. Sorry if that sounds negative, it doesn't mean to. It doesn't mean that he had no understanding of language at all, just less than other children of his age.
