I have 2 severely dyslexic boys. The eldest is yr 8 and currently in school with good dyslexia support but a significant number of kids there with statements for behavioural and emotional issues. We are keen to move him to a school where the focus is more on dyslexia. Does anyone have an recommendations/experience of such schools in the Sussex, Kent, Sussex region? The option to weekly board would be essential.

Are you looking for an indie SS or MS with good learning support? Do your DS' have EHCPs?

If SS you could look at More House, Moon Hall, Knowl Hill all in Surrey and Frewen College, Northease in East Sussex. As a side note just because some pupils have SEMH doesn't mean a school can't meet the needs of pupils with SpLD too.

Thanks for replying 10. I don’t know what SS, MS or SEMH stand for I’m afraid. They’ve both had Ed Psych reports and scored highly in terms of “potential” in that they registered IQs above 130. Ideally we would like an independent with excellent learning support but our experience of 11+ exams suggests that potential is not valued as much as sure things given the increased focus on league tables.

I will take a look are your suggestions.

SS = Special School
MS = Mainstream school
SEMH = Social, Emotional and Mental Health.

Does anyone have any experience of More House? Or know second hand about the school? Moon Hall and Frewen seem lovely but very small in terms of pupil numbers.

I don't have first hand experience, but people generally seem happy with More House.

Hello OP. I have pm'd you. Also wonder if you might get more input if you create a thread on the Education board?

Moon hall wouldn’t even let us look round because like your DS, we’d sent him to a school that has children with social behaviour issues etc (why we wanted to move him!!) Even though our DS doesn’t and is just profoundly dyslexic, they didn’t want to know! You might have more luck though!
It depends how badly dyslexic your DS is as we found that if it’s very severe there really isn’t the choice.

Fearful, than you for your message. I’ve PM’d you.

Have you considered Seaford College in West Sussex?
