Hello everyone,
I am new to the forum hope someone could help me out here as I feel compeletly lost and not sure where to start from. I have a 4 year old daughter with speech and language delay and some sensory issue with clothing . she was attending nursery age 3 where the teachers raised their concern . Long story short she didnt get a reception place in school where she was going for nursery and was put on a waiting list . so meanwhile when we were waiting I didnt wanted to keep her home so I applied for another school where she was accepted for a reception place. she attented school for about one and half week but everyday was such a struggle she wouldnt go out of the house due to her sensory issue with her clothes it was so hard to get her out of the house and in school she had hard time adjusting to the new setting . I was in touch with the senco where they provided a 1-1 support for her but because she didnt have an ehcp plan in place they were funding it from school funds so after one and half week school suggested maybe she is not ready for reception this year and if i could defer her and delay her reception for another year . I agreed with the Senco so she is not going school at the moment and not just them i felt she was not ready for school as everyday she would cry and would refuse to go school. so now I am planning to apply for an EHCP so it would be ready by next year when she joins reception . but I am still in doubt and not sure if I made the right decidion by withrawing her reception place or not sure if the school was honest with me with their suggestions or maybe they didnt want my daughter in their school due to her significant needs .

I'm not really sure what you are asking, but if she isn't attending anywhere, how are you planning to get the EHCP ?

DOes she have a diagnosis of anything ?
Or is she on a waiting list for assessment ?

Having an EHCP, won't actually do anything about her sensory processing differences. With or without and EHCP, the differences will still be there. Has anyone signpost you to any assessment, or to any support around these issues ? Helped you with any suggestions of things that might help ?

Obviously we only have the snippet of information that you have told us, but it sounds like the school weren't interested in helping her. How do they expect her to "become ready for school" without any input to support her to get there ?

Thank you dear for the reply . The Senco of her school have asked me to apply for an EHCP as parents can do it too not sure if it makes any difference if school applies or parents . And with regards to her sensory and language delay we are waiting for a diagnosis .and our plan for now is to keep her back in nursery and apply for reception again when she is 5 .

Advice here how to apply for an EHC Needs assessment with model letter.
www.ipsea.org.uk/ehc-needs-assessments

I would suggest that in addition to all the other assessments, you ask for a Speech & Language Therapy assessment and an Occupational Therapy assessment in view of her speech/language delay and sensory issues.

Bear in mind many LAs turn down initial requests from parents for EHC Needs assessments and then back down when parents appeal. If you need further advice you can get it from IPSEA via their advice line.

You should get support from the nursery, they should know who to contact for help. Nag for the diagnosis, it’ll make all the difference when being considered for EHCplan
