Query re:toilet training and speech delay

DS (3.4) is finally showing an interest. He doesn't usually tell me he needs a wee, but the last few evenings has been toddling into the toilet and sitting on it and producing. Which is all good news of course. What I am wondering is how/when to try and work on toilet use when out and about? Reason I have put my query here rather than main board is that DS seems to have been learning toilet training by imitating me, rather than by communicating his needs iyswim.

Lots of prompts basically.
Cold turkey it (ie no nappies) and remind him every 15 mins.
Lots of praise when he does it, a non committal 'never mind' if he has an accident but leave him in wet clothes long enough to register that it isn't nice.
Never use pull-ups.

Agree with MD (well she would know)

we ahve set aside a time for it to be a priority- we know that camping would be a bad time as the loo block can be a walk, so have assigned time afterwards, we ahve a deadine assigned to us of when he goes to school

Thanks for the prompt advice moondog and peachy.

so basically just bite the bullet and take plenty of spare clothes out with me. I agree about the pull-ups - as I think either they have the control or they haven't iyswim.

sorry you have the stress of having to work to a strict timetable with this peachy. best wishes for him cracking it soon.

he's done it once already then lost it

but to be frank if cant do it thats their problem, if they think I am coming in for a change every few hours they can go jump- phone to ansewrphone and all that. They know the issues, they can sort it (hard bitch me, LOL)

ds2 has a little toilet picture/symbol, he loves carrying it around & will sometimes flash it at me when he needs the loo, his speech is good but the toilet is such a huge anxiety for him he can't verbalise that he needs to go.

On ebay they often have little keyrings (or you could easuily make one yourself with a keyring blank from the craft shop)- each one has a laminated oicture, eg toilet / drink / food / cold. DS3 chewed his up , but it seemed good whilst it lasted LOL

I've got one already peachy, bought a holiday keyring from ebay before we went away, think that has a toilet piccie on it somewhere!

we have dd1(sn and almost 5!) in pull up nappies - able to cope with 4yo accidents. We started with two weeks at home charting what happened every hour can email that to you if you like. Then we decided on a pattern and a toilet timing routine. She will be put on toilet at certain times.

dd2 has decided that she will go nappy less except at night - and it is lot of prompting, spare undies and jeans. She seems to have the hang of weeing in toilet but still get poos in pants. She is very good at telling us if she needs to toilet - just odd accident.

Our plan then with dd1 is next school holidays - when it is much warmer ( in Sept) to take the step to undies. She is taking herself spasmodically to the toilet at home - but we are getting it a lot more when we prompt her at certain times and then she takes herself at other times.

we are in the depths of winter and I don't have enough training undies - towelling with padded centre piece - works well at sopping up little trickles and holding the poo in too.

My ds1 is, as you may know, moderately speech delayed. He wasn't properly trained until 3.6, and even now has an occassional accident.
