Develops tics when challenging behaviour goes down (ASD)

Ds (7) goes through phases of being very challenging and then less so - no identifiable reason for the cycle. Whenever he becomes more compliant he develops a head shake or some other tic. I'm guessing that his challenging behaviour is like a stim which helps him regulate and when he desists from say, hitting me with a broom or goading other family members, he develops a tic of some sort to compensate.

Just wondering if anyone had anything similar or can shed some light.
Thanks
