Setting the ball rolling for assessment for ASC

Another Christmas, another holiday, another week spent out of the comfort zone of routine, have convinced me that I need to press for assessment for DD (9) rather than another year of ‘wait and see, she’ll grow out of it, it’s just introverted personality, she’s only...’ (that I’ve been hearing or saying for years).

Nervous. Terrified. Can I book a GP app to talk about it without her? She can’t tolerate being talked about. School do not understand SEN unless it’s causing challenging behaviour (they just ignore her dyslexia dx, for example) so no help from them.

I suppose I’m really worried about GP just laughing me out of the room instead of making a referral. She functions well at school. Everyone thinks she’s just a bit quirky and different. But I worry so much about the future for her. If she does have Aspergers, then an understanding of that maybe useful to her.

Yes to making an appointment with your GP, without her there.
I would advise you to write down some bullet points first.... your 'evidence' or her symptoms, and the impact that it has on her, and your family's life. It is easy to forget things when you are rushed in an appointment. Where possible, try to quantify things and give specific examples.

Thanks. Turns out we can self refer in our area, so I don’t think I need a trip to the GP. My main difficulty is going to be getting any input from school as they don’t see any problem (I think they just think I’m a neurotic mother). All her difficulties are saved for home - I know this can be fairly typical and have seen/ heard, as a mainstream teacher in the past, how parents like me are talked about in the staff room.
