Medikinet ADHD and ASD

Hi all, my son is 7 and has ADHD and ASD and has been started on methylphenidate (medikinet 5mg) twice in the last few weeks.

First attempt, he was started on 5mg and when it was increased to 7.5 after a couple of days and he had an extreme negative response Sad

He was immediately taken off of the meds only to be restarted a couple of weeks ago on 2.5mg with an increase of 2.5mg per week. We have reluctantly given him the 7.5mg dose this morning expecting the same reaction and thankfully it hasn't come.

He is however very confused, repeating himself over and over again and appears unable to process any of what is being said to him ( he has problems with auditory processing anyway but this is significantly worse than usual) he is also not able to put frequently used sentences together and is mixing up most of his words.

I was told that once medicated they expected his ASD to be even more prominent and that already appears to be the case, for example he is stimming around 90% of the time and isn't doing much else!

But I'm unsure today if the medication is directly causing him to be unable to communicate, like a side effect, or if this is how he will be if we keep him on the medication if you see what I mean Confused

I'm hoping someone will have some advice as it's the weekend so all usual ports of call are unavailable!

Thank youSmile

My DD is on medikinet and has been for a couple of years. She started on a low dose and increased to 20mg. At that dose she wasn't herself at all so after about a week the paed decreased it to 15mg. IIWY I would decrease to the dose at which he seems ok and contact medical people on Monday.

We have an appointment with the paed Monday afternoon so I'll see what he suggests then but think I will drop it back down tomorrow until I've spoken to him, thanks :-)
