I believe that our local Language unit, attached to a mainstream school, is being phased out. No new children are coming into the base and the rumour is that it will close once the present children are through. This is horrendous. There will be no specialist language unit in the whole county. There will be no options for children with Sp and Lang or Communication disorders/delays, it will have to be mainstream. The first layer of Managers seem to feel that mainstream is the only option and Early years teachers can cope with these disorders in the mainstream classroom. The unit has been so successful. It is well intergrated into the mainstream school. I really need some guidance where to find reports etc that will counteract the argument that there is no need/demand for the unit. Anecdotal evidence will not be enough. If anyone has any suggestions I would be so grateful. I am a big fan of mainstream but do not believe that it should be the only option. My child would have closed right up in a large class. A small class with fabulous , focused input, has been great.
