5yr old having difficulties at school - adhd?

My 5.5yr old ds1 is having a hard time at school (he's in P1 at a Scottish primary). He started off well, but is now severely behind everyone else with reading and maths, and in a special reading group. He has real difficulties with concentration - his head is in the clouds lots of the time -but when he concentrates he does fine and (I'm biased I know) otherwise seems to be a really bright boy. Now he's frustrated and has started getting into fights; although he does make friends, he does seem to have quite intense friendships and in a group situation often gets singled out and picked on. His dad was removed from primary school in the 2nd yr because he was disruptive, and diagnosed (in the early 70's) as being hyperactive, and we wondered if ds1 has some form of ADHD as we know there's a hereditary element. I'm going to a meeting at the school next week - has anyone got any advice on how to handle this, what I can do to make my son happier (he's very down on himself at the moment, saying he's stupid etc), whether it's a good idea to try to get a "diagnosis" at this stage etc? I just don't know what to do for the best.

What about checking his hearing or sight. Its worth ruling out simple things that can be corrected.
