dla mobility question i affraid

right my ds has asd no speech or communication cant walk out side with out you holding onto him otherwise he would just run off no sense of danger etc
i dont want to sound like a scrounger but anyone any ideas of what to put on the form to try and get high level mobility award he is 4 and a half

bubble, i was just told worse case scenario, we all know our kids have good days and bad days, dont mention the good days, where it asks about mobility tell them he can walk but not without being held, i am pretty sure that is what i put in my ds3 dla form, i didnt get mobility though as he wasnt 5 and was meant to re-apply then but didnt, i think the mobility is mainly paid before 5 for physical mobility problems, so it may get suspended to start when he is 5 as that is what they did with ds4, he has leg problems but he wasnt 3 at the time and they held payment for mobility until his 3rd birthday, if you are unsure on anything with the form either try the disability helpline as they were quite helpful, or ask h/v or someone from ds school or pre-school, they should be able to help, good luck hun

If you are trying to get higher rate mobility DLA you might find this useful:

Applies to people over 3. This info is from a leaflet to do with DLA that is printed by Social Security and The Benefits Agency, it is leaflet no DS706 (but may have now been updated/superseded so CHECK!). To quote:

A child aged 3 or over may be able to get help with getting around if they:

• are severely mentally impaired with severe behavioural problems and qualify for the highest rate care component

(the empty dashes are other points relating to physical disability I can?t be bothered to type out)

A Child aged 5 or over may be able to get help with getting around if they:

• can walk but need someone with them when they are walking outdoors

I also found it helped when I asked them to "look again", having been turned down, to make the point that my niece (who is the same age as DS) COULD walk to school at the top of the road alone or go to the local shops but she wasn't ALLOWED to, whereas my DS COULDN'T iyswim.

DS is nearly seven and gets highest rate DLA. He is a catagory 4+ special needs with a mental age of 18 mnths - 2 yrs. He is as big as a 9 yr old and very strong.

Was told that he wouldn't get higher rate mobility as he CAN walk and have been told a 'blue badge' is out of the question.

Is it really worth filling in the forms again? I know that I only have to fill in the mobility bit again, but it's such a slog on top of every thing else

What do u think I should do?

We currently get DLA for our twin boys aged 3.

DT2 has highest rate care and mobility- he has Global Development Delay, Joint Hypermobility, Low tone, Gastro Oseophegus reflux, he has difficulty walking around too. He can walk but his legs get so sore we have to have a buggy with us. We had to go to appeal on this 1 too.

They originally awarded low rate care stating he need only an hour additonal support a day WTF!!! refused when I asked to look again so went to appeal and won

DT1 has behavioural issues. His DLA claim was refused at 1st stage and look again stage again we went to appeal and he was awarded middle rate care- only till Januray 2008 so expecting to go through the whole rigmarole again

We have also found out DS1(5) has Dyspraxia and if I am honest we always had our suspisions but never faced them, I am dreading filling out forms for him as I am unsure right now whether I can go to another appeal but they are here and I will motivate my ass and get them done.

My son sounds exactly like yours bubble, even the same age and he gets both higher rate care an mobility until 2015 I claimed using the info Davros posted

How did you get it for solong? C gets high rate mobility because she is a total quadraplegic. Can't even sit, let alone walk. But its only been awarded till 5 and then we'll have to fill in the forms again! Theymust know cerebral palsy doesn't suddenly vanish!

I often get confused about Blue Badges as I only think of them in relation to DLA and the mobility component. There certainly IS provision to get one via DLA as I posted previously. But I always forget about the route where you just ask your Council.... I think that is very much harder.

no he only gets it at middle rate but i have filled in and sent the renewal forms so hope to hear back soon

Jambuttie, thanks! went along to DHSS office, (unfortunately they know me so well, that they don't even have to ask my name!) and they said 'don't worry about the forms again, just send a letter with your request and we'll take it from there' So, I am waiting a rejection letter to arrive anyday now

I will persue this matter to appeal and will appeal again for his 'blue badge' It was refused as he can walk 100 metres, no mention of me being dragged over when he wants to go the other way etc, etc!!

Manxmum, on the grounds I outlined below, they can't refuse on the grounds that he can walk 100 meters (unless he is under 3). The staff at the DHSS office may well not know this and be refusing you on their genuine belief that this is correct but it is NOT and you may have to be persistent (what? one of us persistent ) and help them to learn their own rules! Good luck, its like pushing a lump of shit uphill on a hot summer day, aaagh.
