Hello Mums,
My son was 6 in October and in Yr1. One of the oldest in his class but he struggles with reading and writing.
His handwriting seems to puzzle his teacher and SENCo the most.
It is pretty quirky.
He starts his letters in strange places, does lots of reversals (esp. numbers). Despite having been taught consistently at school, he forgets his finger spacing and writes long sequences of uneven letters. He mixes lower and upper case in middle of words. Also, his spelling is "original".
He doesn't colour neatly either.
His teacher/SENCo mentioned that it might be something to do with his fine motor skills. The thing is he's always had excellent fine motor skills, building tiny Lego machines from age 4 with tiny lights and bits.
I think this would have to be more a fine motor skill problem linked to handling a pen.
Anyone here has a dysgraphic child?
I've heard that fine motor skills for writing are in a different part of the brain than other general fine motor skills. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
Many thanks!
