ASD - receptive language assessment at school?

Hi all,

The speech and Lang Therapist is visiting school to carry out a receptive language assessment on Dd. She is under assessment for high functioning autism. Did anyone know that his assessment consists of and what they look for?

My DD also has Selective Mutism, which they are aware of and won’t necessarily always speak at school. They may overhear her talk to a friend...

She will be anxious if she spots the therapist and may fall silent/freeze up

It depends on her age! If she is within the age range, they might do pre-school CELF; or CELF 4 (clinical evaluation of language fundamentals). Apart from that, it is the skill of the speech therapist to decide what tests are necessary, depending on what they see in the child. They might well do BPVS (British Picture Vocabulary Scale), which obviously looks at vocabulary, and it is frequently done with CELF. There are other tests like TROG, Test Reception of Grammar....it depends!

CELF is quite boring, so that may be all they can do in one session, especially if DD freezes - they may just have to try to get beyond that first. Maggie Johnson calls it "sliding in"!
