Will she ever speak?!

My dd is five in April. She has some basic one word functional language. She does make lots of noises and some of the words don’t sound quite right but what’s the likelihood of her becoming verbal. Her sibling who also has asd had more language but was signed off from salt at 7 because she had age appropriate speech. How do you tell if your child will ever speak? She understands a lot of what we say but Speech is very poor.

I'm my experience I'm dd speech has got better. She was like this by 4/5 very little speech. She's come on amazingly with her language since starting school and now is a lot more vocal. Though still isn't able to hold a conversation just yet.

I think after two months our mainstream is hoping we’ll remove her. I get screaming when she can’t be understood is tough but it feels like the key to most of her issues though her anxiety is insane. I’ll keep plugging on but sometimes it feels so exhausting. My other dd picked up a lot part way through primary so I’m just hoping.

Do you think the school is meeting her needs?

I get this. My ds is 9 and has one/two word (rarity) sentences and I constantly ask “is this all he will ever speak?” We’ve tried ABA, VB, Pecs, private salt, the list goes on.
I guess we keep doing what we’re doing and hope the frustration he feels and exhibits will spur him on to speak more.

Lesley25 Have you tried Assistive technology ? This was a God Send for DS.

Op, I thought the same. DS has Autism as well as being diagnosed with a language disorder and Verbal Dyspraxia !

DS in now 7 and we can have proper conversations now. He's not speaking "typically" like a 7 year old. His speech/ conversation skills may always be different but his getting there.

However, DS speech didn't blossom until we moved him to a specialist setting for children with speech and language/ communication disorders. Plus we were given an Assistive technology device and it helped DS with his speech enormously. Out of all the things we tried (PECS, MAKATON, PRIVATE SLT) apart from his school, his language exploded when he was given a communication device.

School are awful! Despite full funding she’s just started doing two hours a day. They also don’t want to take her on the school trip. The head basically doesn’t want her. I’m starting up with my own version of pecs. She has a lot of words but hasn’t twigged that she needs to use them yet. So I have hope though some days I don’t feel I have anything left.

I’m not sure on the school to be honest. I’m reluctant to move her now as finally getting her settled. We’ve said the more time in school the more she will settle but it’s a battle.

Find a different school!!
