Just got back from visiting MIL and she has once again given me an article from the daily mail about ADHD. It's very offensive as it says medication alters young people's brains and it's poor parenting that is the problem.

Oh scrabble my MIL does this too (Daily Mail clippings).

So many times I’ve felt I’ve explained to her why I don’t agree (with frankly anything the DM says, although especially on autism). Each time I feel like I’ve got through to her - but the next time I go invariably she gives me another one.

Medication isn't something you do to change your child or their brain, - it is something you take to enable your brain to be calm enough to learn, with a view, perhaps, to learning the skills to manage difficulties without medication.

But unless the medication is taken, you can't concentrate long enough to develop the skills to have a choice often.

I get newspaper articles too. About autism being caused by living near London, watching TV, not breastfeeding, having too many plastic toys, not being talked to enough, not cuddling enough.

I don't read them any more, but chuck them in the recycling as soon as they arrive.

But actual the consesus is that adhd medications alter brain development-in the best way possible. As brain development is use dependant and the correct adhd meds enable a child to focus and organise their thoughts then using these meds mean that the neurological connections in areas of the brain that deal with focus/organisation/short term memory has an opportunity to improove if these meds are used pver a period of time during childhood. Tell her that. &ignore dm shite.
