A few ADOS questions

Hi,

I was just wondering if ADOS purely will state wether or not my child is on the spectrum or not, or do they actually give a diagnosis?

How do you actually get a concrete diagnosis? My theory is my child has a possibility of 3 overlapping conditions. do they get dx seperatley or just classified as ASD?

Thanks

ADOS is used as part of an assessment but should be accompanied by clinical judgement.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by '3 overlapping conditions' and 'get diagnosed separately or just classified as ASD'?

In my opinion its possibly HFA, ODD and auditory processing disorder.

Would these get diagnosed voa ados?

No, ADOS is an autism diagnostic tool.

Audio processing is diagnosed by audiologist, and series of tests. My son had them, we have to go back for more, it's likely that he has some audio processing difficulties. However it said in his appointment letter that they would not test if he had autism diagnosis, don't ask me why, my son had ados but didn't get diagnosed as autistic.

So...will they diagnose or just advise if she is on the spectrum?

I don't understand. An autism diagnosis is a diagnosis of being on the autism spectrum which means she's autistic.

A diagnosis of anything is official confirmation that a set of criteria are met. If she meets the criteria for autism then she should be diagnosed.

Thats what I mean....but being on the autistic spectrum could be a number of different conditions.

What I am asking is...following the ADOS would they say she is on the spectrum and clarify why...such as HFA....ADHD, ODD etc

or would it just be...yes...she is on the spectrum and left at that.

The autism spectrum only includes autism. Sometime sub-categories of autism like Aspergers are used, but ADHD and ODD aren't autism so they can't be diagnosed by ADOS.

Ahhh...ok....I understand why my original question doesnt make sense now! DOH!

So Ados just say wether or not she meets the criteria for Autism

Yes, ADOS is just for autism.

Phew!

Good luck Flowers

ADOS should just be part of an ASD assessment though, it needs to be backed up with other assessments.
