ASD and writing

DS (6) cannot, after much trying, write the maths signs < > . There were similar issues when he learnt to write, i.e. making his hand do what he wants it to do. Is that specifically an autism thing? And anyone had any success improving the ability to coordinate hand and eye?

Thanks zzzzz. We tried the dots, which enables him to do it, but slowly as he gets the direction wrong. I'll look into the visual processing thing, it sounds like that is the most likely explanation.
