Movicol dosage?

DS is on movicol (or the generic equivalent anyway, have been told by dr it's the same) for stool withholding. So far one sachet a day hasn't done much and I know I'll need to up the dose as it says to do on the prescription.

However-does upping the dose mean giving him two sachets at once or another sachet at another point in the day?! Just realised I have no idea!

We give it all with breakfast. I wouldn't want to give it late in the day and send her to bed with a full bowel, but I imagine lunchtime would be fine.

I think it's whatever works for your child . Different children must have different transit times. Movicol clearouts can be 10 sachets in a day, and I think it's not absorbed by the body as such, it just works physically in the bowel, so AFAIK (NOT a doctor!) it's safe and he won't overdose.

Yes my reading seems to agree with that (not absorbed in blood stream) and would be far easier to make it up in the morning in one go even if he drinks it as the morning goes on.

If he bloody drinks it. Not having much luck so far, despite my best efforts to disguise it/bribe him!

We go for the thickest or strongest flavour fruit juices - pineapple or orange - and it helps massively to leave it to stand for a couple of mins. And yes, just once a day minimises the trauma. You know you can put it in much more liquid than it says, as long as he drinks it all?

There is a choc flavour which DD would like to try, but we never have because I'd need to ask for a whole month's worth.

Thanks, yes I tried pineapple and coconut juice today and he wasn't having it unless I did a chocolate button with every sip! I think I'll go for lots more water tomorrow-had been reluctant to try this as it just draws out the whole process but maybe will dilute the taste?!

All a learning curve eh?! 8 sachets by the end of the week that'll be...joyous for all involved Confused

Hmm, maybe up the stakes to a fun size choc bar after the whole thing? Good luck.

My DD is on movicol, fortunately only twice a week, but her preferred drink of choice is coke (zero!) It's affectionately known as "poo juice" in our house as she suffers from chronic constipation so if she needs any more she can ask for some easily. Good luck with your DS!
