Reduced timetable

My DS has ASD and is struggling in school and so is now on a reduced timetable. He is in a unit attached to a mainstream school and it is is too late to move him before he moves to special school in sept.
I am happy for him to do the reduced time-table and take him off to other activities but I'm not sure what else he is meant to do educationally. School may send work home but unless he is supervised 1:1 he will not do the work. I am not prepared to home school him or educate him at home whilst he is not in school (I know it sounds harsh but he is tough enought to look after full time without me trying to teach him too) so should the LA be providing someone to come and support him whilst on the reduced time-table?

When ds2 was on a reduced time table (about 2 hours a day) school sent nothing home. We made absolutely no attempt to educate at home and just did fun stuff at home or took him places to visit when he was willing to do so (not often).

Did you ask the LA if that was OK or you just did it? How long was your DS on the reduced timetable?
I was thinking of emailing our LA officer just so they know that I have no intention of trying to educate him myself. (I have already said this to them but probably worth reminding them!)

There was a fairly recent Upper Tribunal case where they suggested that if a school puts a child on a part time timetable, they must arrange something like home tuition for at least part of the rest of the time, otherwise it would be disability discrimination because children are by law entitled to full time education. I think they also pointed out correctly that it is primarily the duty of the council to ensure that children receive full time education, so you could push them as well.

I think we may have had a conversation along the lines of if you don't like it then find him a suitable school placement. I don't think we put anything in writing other than to say we accepted the reduced hours only for a fixed time period.

We were in a slightly different situation that an alternative placement had not been found when he started on the reduced hours and when nothing appeared to be happening about this we put in an official complaint to the LA after about 2 months. Things started moving after this and he did end up moving to specialist provision (supposedly anyway but that's another story) half way through the school year.

As you did not opt for home education then there is no way (in my opinion) they can compel you to do so. There is no way ds2 would have done work at home at this time which both school and we knew so there was no point us asking for any.

Hiya. My 6 year old Ds has been on a reduced timetable since going back after the Christmas break. School didn't give us another choice and we are now at the stage of doing a managed move to another school. Anyway not only have school not sent home any extra work these last few months they've not even bothered to send home his homework and reading book and I've had to mither every week. They're just not arsed and have made no reasonable adjustments or any effort to provide extra work or activities for him.

Emerald, does your DS have an EHCP? If not I suggest you apply immediately. Also contact the LA urgently about the fact that he is entitled to full time education and ask them for their proposals to ensure he receives it.
