Yes - PECS definitely kick-started speech with DS2 (he's 4.5 and we started 9 months ago). He had a few words before but didn't really use them functionally. He started just exchanging, and we would always say 'Oh, DS2 wants x' very enthusiastically. Then he moved onto sometimes saying the word spontaneously. Now he uses the sentence strip with 'I want x', we get him to point to x and say the word. More often than not nowadays he just shoves the strip at us and says 'crisp!' or ''drink!'. Not polite but effective! Or sometimes he just asks for what he wants without the PECS (though I know the PECS people would say we should always make him exchange).

When we did the PECS training they quoted a statistic which said (I think) that 75% of pre-schoolers who used PECS eventually went on to develop speech. So prognosis is good!
